1rd February 2022: Turangi trout fishing report

Weather: 27 degree C (day), 13 degree C (evening), hot sunny day light easterly breeze

The Tongariro river Tauranga Taupo and Hine are all holding Trout and are fishing fine on the river also mouths were they enter Lake Taupo. Cicada flies are hatching from the ground and will continue as the main hatch seems to start about the end of January every year so the Christmas hatch we have had has certainly has been a fly fisher person bonus if fishing dries, the last Christmas hatch for us was 1993.

Trout are feeding on the surface food a lot this time of year eating Willow Grubs, Spiders, Passion Fruit Hopper, Blow flies, Cicadas, Grass hoppers mice, Caddis and many. May flies fished as dries will fish well as the temperature drops closer to Autumn as their preferred hatching temperatures are below 20c.hence we see lots of May fly emergence around spring time as we get closer to Autumn we occasionally over the summer we have a very cold southerly weather pattern hit Turangi its on these snap cold southern changes you see May fly emergence over summer time. Turangi rivers are running nice and clear but due to lack of heavy rain and hot sun they are becoming very slippery so the use of a wading stick is will help.

Dry Fly Fishing for the evening hatch or rise has been great with many a nice big Brown been landed by some lucky anglers , Caddis ie moths , Grass Grub ie Brown beetle , water beetles ,May flies all are fishing well. Lake Otamangakau has fished very good so far this season but sadly it appears to getting a little too warm at this present time and should fish a little better after as our temperature slowly cools a little.
Fantastic fishing is to be had on lakes Kuratau and Rotoriara at present both of these lakes produce wonderful eating Trout due the diet of fresh water Crayfish, Koura.

Boat angler reports are still good from Lake Taupo with the best catch rates fishing early morning and evening when the sun has lowered a little. All styles of fly fishing appear to working on rivers and lakes.

Cheers tight lines
